About Dr. Said Sokhandan
Naturopathic Physician
Naturopathic Medicine - Cranial Sacral Therapy
Chinese Herbal Medicine - Acupuncture
Nutrition - Integrated Counseling
Dr. Said Sokhandan first became interested in medicine through his grandmother, who herself was a naturopath. "When I was young," says Dr. Sokhandan, "I was fascinated that villagers came from so far away to see her." His grandmother's example eventually led him to complete a Doctoral degree in Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University. He also has a Master of Science in acupuncture and oriental medicine, and was trained at the Shanghai University Research Institute. He is licensed as a Primary Care Provider by the State of Washington.
How Naturopathy Is Different
Traditional western medicine tends to begin by looking at isolated body parts--heart, stomach, nerves, etc., and to focus on medications as the treatment of choice. A naturopathic physician focuses on the person as a whole, not just the parts. Besides examining the physical body, Dr. Sokhandan also takes into account a person's mental, emotional, and spiritual condition. While he is licensed to prescribe medication when appropriate, it may often be a treatment of last resort. Naturopathy is enjoying revived popularity as people begin to understand its possibilities, and insurance companies begin to open up to naturopathic treatments.
"In Western medicine, everything is being prescribed these days, from Viagra to Prozac," Dr. Sokhandan says. "But society is becoming more educated, and we're trying to assist by being teachers. We want to help you learn what is good for your own body and your personal circumstances. Then you'll be better able to take care of yourself."
